MAIN PLENARY SPEAKERS

IAN MURPHY
MANAGING DIRECTOR 

As our Managing Director, Ian has overall accountability for the performance of our business and has played an instrumental role in creating and establishing Foodbuy in the UK. Prior to becoming Managing Director, Ian was our Chief Procurement Officer. In this role he headed up our strategic sourcing and category development teams who negotiate tenders with our suppliers and maximise value for our clients by focusing on quality, service, innovation and price.

Working with some remarkable people and buying amazing products and services for our clients is what motivates Ian. It's these products and services that we use to demonstrate to clients what we can do for them and the value we can bring to their businesses. A big sports fan, he is married with two young daughters.

ROBIN MILLS
MANAGING DIRECTOR, COMPASS GROUP UK & IRELAND

Robin joined Compass Group in 2008 as HR Director for the UK & Ireland Business and was then appointed Managing Director for Chartwells, the UK & Ireland’s education business in May 2011. Robin subsequently became Group Chief People Officer for Compass Group PLC.
 
Prior to Compass, Robin held a number of senior operational and functional roles within the retail and food and drink industries working for leading brands such as Kingfisher, Diageo, and Scottish and Newcastle PLC. His diverse experience across differing markets means Robin is perfectly placed to lead the UK & Ireland business on its growth journey. 

ANDY BADGER
CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER
FOODBUY

In his role as Chief Information Officer, Andy is responsible for the market leading electronic procurement systems that enable us to deliver the best possible service to our clients. With a background in IT and running successful businesses, Andy leads a team of talented developers who are focussed on advancing our systems.

Andy loves a challenge and enjoys the complexity of his role. It’s the diversity of the industry and solving complex problems that keep him motivated. With an appreciation for a great lamb tikka madras, you might find him at his favourite curry house, The Indian Lounge in Ramsbottom.

KARL ATKINS
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

As Chief Operating Officer, Karl leads our client business team which involves ensuring we are always delivering great procurement services to our diverse client base and helping them unlock the power of their supply chains. Karl also makes sure our Foodbuy proposition remains innovative and relevant to attract new clients.

With a career spanning food retail, foodservice and FMCG manufacturers, Karl brings a diverse range of experience to Foodbuy. It’s building solutions to help clients solve some of their key business challenges that Karl enjoys most. Products, food, ingredients and services are all integral to our client’s businesses and he finds it exciting to help clients maximise the value from these areas. At Foodbuy, it’s a combination of our enormous potential and the energy and passion from all our team that he thinks makes our business great.

Outside of work Karl’s young family keeps him busy and he is also working towards completing an Executive MBA.

MICHELLE FARGEN
SUPPLY CHAIN & CATEGORY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

As our Supply Chain & Category Development Director, Michelle leads the teams who work alongside our suppliers and distributors to deliver both the products and the value for our clients. Having joined us from Foodbuy in the US, she brings with her a wealth of experience and strategic expertise.

We make things easy for our clients which is why a key focus for Michelle’s team is ensuring we maximise value from the deals we have negotiated, as well as choosing the optimum route to market for all our clients’ goods and services. She also ensures we closely manage supplier relationships and performance to deliver a great service. A keen runner for meditation, Michelle enjoys raising money for our charity partner Duchenne UK, and spending time with her husband and two sons.

GUY MEDLEY
FINANCE DIRECTOR

Guy provides leadership on our finance and accounting strategies to optimise our financial performance and strategic position. Having trained as a Chartered Accountant with Moores Rowland Chartered Accountants, Guy has worked in the foodservice industry for the past 18 years.

Genuinely feeling he is contributing to the growth and success of our business is what spurs him on. Passionate about people, Guy places a lot of emphasis on developing his team to ensure they are best placed to navigate the dynamic and constantly changing procurement industry. Keeping fit and active, Guy plays cricket for the local village team and has completed a number of half marathons.

JAMES WALTON
CHIEF ECONOMIST - IGD SOLUTIONS

James’ role at IGD is to help businesses anticipate and cope with strategic events, including economic pressures, geo-political change, social developments and environmental stress. James is well known for speaking at both UK and international events and provides interviews for TV, radio and the press. He also creates original reports and articles for IGD.
 
James has worked with clients across the entire grocery industry as well as with non-industry groups such as government departments, financial businesses and NGOs. James joined IGD in April 1999 and has served in several roles, becoming Chief Economist in 2004.
 

SIMON WAINWRIGHT
DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL INSIGHT - IGD SOLUTIONS

Simon joined IGD in 2017 to lead the research and coverage on UK multiples, focusing on the strategies being used to meet current and future shopper needs. As Director of Global Insight, Simon is responsible for IGD’s global research programme and leads a team of 30 analysts responsible for creating content and delivering briefings to help retailers and suppliers adapt and grow. 
 
Simon is also becoming increasingly well-known across the industry through his chairing of IGD retailer supplier engagement events and media work. Simon’s 20+ years’ experience in Insight & Research has spanned both Retail & Manufacturing, having worked at Tesco and more recently Burtons Biscuits. Simon has also spent a significant amount of his career agency side delivering insight programs for many UK retailers and manufacturers. 
 
Simon holds a degree in Psychology from the University of Surrey as well as Diploma in Market Research (Distinction) from the University of Westminster. 

BREAKOUT SPEAKERS

NEIL CHAPMAN
HEAD OF CATEGORY – SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT (NON FOOD)

Neil joined the Compass Group UK & Ireland Commercial team in 2015, latterly becoming Foodbuy. Upon joining, Neil managed our Hot Beverage & Vending categories, before moving to the role of Head of Category - Grocery & Savoury in 2017. In 2018 he took on the role of Head of Category – Supplies & Equipment, focused on working with our clients to deliver solutions and value within their ‘non food’ spend, whilst unlocking growth for our supply partners.

Outside of work, Neil enjoys travelling, cycling and spending time with friends and family, with two young daughters keeping him busy.

SOPHIE DANIELS
HEAD OF CATEGORY – RETAIL & BWS

Sophie is a graduate and procurement professional with over 10 years’ experience primarily focused within the Foodservice and Retail industries.

After graduating with BA Hons in International Business Management, Sophie has gained a wealth of experience in supply chain, procurement & category management roles. The majority of experience in consumer led category roles.

In 2008, she joined the Compass Group UK & Ireland Purchasing Team in supply chain managing the non-food & ambient product routes to market, with a key focus on service level improvement, range management, delivering efficiencies and forecasting.

She then moved into to the buying team and has led and delivered significant change programmes across the chilled food to go, bakery, hot beverage and vending categories, including range relaunches, re-brands, category optimisation projects and many more. Sophie is now heading up the retail & beers, wine & spirits category team where she is excited to use her experience to help grow and deliver value in these categories through giving consumers and clients what they want.

Sophie thrives in a fast paced, commercial & energetic environment and really enjoys delivering results through great partnerships with her suppliers, stakeholders and team.

Outside of work, Sophie loves spending time with friends & family whether that be eating, drinking, holidaying or all of the above! And when she’s not doing that you’ll probably find her exercising.

DAN PERFECT
HEAD OF SERVICES & RETAIL PARTNERSHIPS

Dan is a procurement professional with a focus on collaboration and creative solutions that increase value not only for clients but also suppliers.
 
After graduating with a degree in Psychology from the University of Wales, Swansea, Dan worked for a number of years at leading DIY retailer B&Q Plc gaining experience in supply chain, retail buying and overseas sourcing in a FMCG environment. After this Dan shifted from a retail buying role into procurement, managing the indirect category for leading cruise company, Carnival Plc and subsequently headed up indirects for the UK’s leading retirement developer McCarthy & Stone Plc.
 
In 2015, Dan joined the Compass Group UK & Ireland Commercial team as a Strategic Sourcing Lead. As well as overseeing significant sourcing programs in both the core food and non-food categories, Dan also spearheaded an initiative to redefine and bring up to date the Foodbuy Procurement Framework (FPF), as an evolution of the Compass Procurement Framework following the creation of Foodbuy in 2015/16. This new Foodbuy Procurement Framework underpins all procurement activity carried out within Foodbuy and provides the foundation from which we are able to consistently create value for our clients.
 
Dan’s current role as Head of Services & Retail Partnerships sees him overseeing all of our subcontract and indirect service categories. Currently, Dan is leading on a key transformation project to redefine our management of services categories and the value we can drive from them for both our partners and our clients, through a new way of focus and support of key categories and leveraging technology.

EMMA WILLIAMSON
HEAD OF CATEGORY - FOOD

Emma is a food and procurement professional with extensive experience across foodservice, manufacturing and retail sectors. Previously working for Britvic, Nestle and Sainsbury’s; she joined Compass in 2014. Before taking on the role of Head of Category – Core Food, Emma managed various sourcing and category programmes across the food categories with particular focus on strategy development and long-range growth plans. Being passionate about food is rooted into her background from growing up on a farm in the Lakes. Emma is committed to supply chain development with a particular focus on sustainability, supply chain assurance and animal welfare.
 
Outside of work, Emma loves to travel – especially combining trips with great food and drink – otherwise she is usually socialising with friends and family.

STEVEN MCGEAGH
HEAD OF CATEGORY - GROCERY & SAVOURY

After graduating with BA Hons degree, Steven joined the hospitality sector, managing Food and Beverage in a number of bars, restaurants and casinos. 
 
Prior to joining Compass Group he worked in procurement in food manufacturing for 5 years. Steven joined Compass and the Food team in 2015 managing the Fruit and Veg category before moving into Strategic Sourcing where he led a number of programs across Food and Retail. Steven is now Head of Category for Grocery & Savoury and is also focussed on client solutions across all key routes to market and delivering growth to our supply partners.
 
Outside of work Steven enjoys running, football and keeping fit – with a new daughter born in May 2019 now taking up much of his spare time!


JONATHAN WRIGHT
HEAD OF CATEGORY - HOT BEVERAGES & BAKERY


Jonathan has a wealth of retail and food service experience having worked in operations and commercial both in the UK and Europe.  

Jonathan graduated from Nottingham University with a BA in Politics before starting his career at Marks and Spencer Plc. Here Jonathan worked in store operations as a Store Manager and Food Commercial Manager. Highlights included store redevelopment, store excellence program delivery and significant, sustainable sales growth.

During Jonathan’s 5 years at Foodbuy, he has led and delivered a number of significant category projects in Food to Go, Beers, Wines and Spirits and Dairy. Programs have included complex tenders, brand development and range optimisation. Jonathan now leads the Hot Beverage, Bakery and Vending categories. The team focus on robust program delivery, strategic partnership growth and customer focused category management, making it easier for clients to find the right solution in complex categories.

Outside of work, Jonathan enjoys a trip away with his wife and dog, whether that be Australia or just the local beach!
